AstraZeneca has agreed to pay $75 million to settle allegations that it illegally marketed and promoted the erectile dysfunction drug Cialis to doctors without proper medical supervision.
The settlement comes as the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a review of several drug safety assessments, including that Cialis may increase the risk of heart attack, stroke and other heart problems.
In the FDA review, the agency found that Cialis and similar drugs, like Viagra, may cause heart attacks and strokes. The agency also found that the drug’s FDA label did not provide adequate warnings about these serious side effects.
The agency also concluded that, for many drugs in the class C group, the risk of a heart attack or stroke is a “signal” rather than a warning, and the FDA did not have sufficient information to determine whether the drug caused such a risk.
